How I Created The Shot:

Some days when you go out photographing, things don’t turn out how you planned. The elements may change, or not evolve as you hoped, and you have to make the best of what’s happening around you.

When arrived on this Wednesday afternoon, I was excited thinking I had a great opportunity to capture a couple of unique and beautiful images. One shot being on the north side of Baldwin Creek along the shoreline, the second image facing south at the other end of 4 Mile Beach.

Unfortunately, I failed to check the tidal chart before leaving my studio, and as it turns out, it was high tide, and I could not access either side of the beach. But, because I’m stubborn, I still attemped to get a couple of shots. Of course, that required running in and out from the surf, dodging this way or that, eventually getting wet and ultimately having to surrender to the elements.

So, what opportunities presented itself for me to capture?

I looked around and noticed the sun was low in the sky, setting a quiet, peaceful scene consisting of a swollen Baldwin Creek, winding along the beach and emptying itself into the Pacific Ocean. I grabbed my trusty 24mm lens, attached it to my camera, added a neutral density filter to my lens for a longer exposure, then spent some time composing my shot. I photographed this scene for about 90 minutes, recomposing the image a few times, always looking for a better angle or more interesting image.

After editing the days work, I determined the image pictured above best captured the quiet, peaceful feeling of the moment I enjoyed that evening.
